We are all travelers in the wilderness of this world, and the best we can find in our travels is an honest friend.
Robert Louis Stevenson
I pushed open the door of the flower shop and entered chaos.
Overhead, a twangy country voice was belting out the seventiesâ chestnut, âI Never Promised You a Rose Gardenâ while from the back, Marcâs voice thundered over the music. âDid you find someone?â
âNot yet,â Annie yelled, her head turned toward the back room and a phone clutched against her yellow T-shirt that read Watch out or Iâll use my opera voice. âStill trying. And could you please lose the country twang-fest so they can hear me?â
The music softened by several decibels.
âThank you!â Annieâs head snapped back to the front and she punched in a phone number. When she finished dialing, she looked up. Seeing me, she gave me a quick smile and held up her index finger in a just-a-minute gesture while she spoke into the phone. âSuze? Hey, itâs Annie. Whatâs goinâ on?â Her face fell. âOh. Sounds fun. Donât suppose youâd like to blow it off and earn fifty bucks instead? Tobyâs sick and weâre desperate.â She listened to the voice on the other end. âNo, thatâs okay, I understand. Donât worry about it. Iâll find someone else. Have fun.â She hung up the phone and blew out a large puff of air.
âSounds like you guys are having a bad day.â
âYou can say that again. My brother, our delivery driver, is sicker than a dog and weâre absolutely slammed. Weâve got four funerals and a wedding, a couple birthdays, and some assorted congratulations all to deliver before the end of the day.â
âDonât you have a back-up driver?â
âThat would be my mom.â She shoved her hand through her platinum spikes. âAnd sheâs at the ER with Toby. She thinks it might be pneumonia or something.â
âIâm sorry.â I touched her arm. âDo you need to go to the hospital?â
Annie shook her head. âYou know how ERâs are. I was there for nearly three hours this morning just hanginâ out in the waiting room. Couldnât do anything there, so I decided to come to work and keep busy. Momâll call me once they see the doctor.â She scrolled through her contacts on her cell. âNow Iâm just trying to find someone to â â
âAny luck?â Marc called from the back.
âNope. Still trying.â
He hurried out front. âWe might have to closâ Paige, hi. Sorry, I didnât know you were here.â
âThatâs okay. I know you guys are busy and stressed.â
Should I?
What? Offer to help? Youâre directionally impaired. Remember? And you donât even have a GPS system. Youâd get totally lost.
I know. But theyâre really in a jam. The least I can do is offer.
You sure you want to do this? You might really screw it up. Take the wrong flowers to the wrong house or whatever.
Oh, put a sock in it.
I took a deep breath. âCan I help?â
âReally?â Marcâs face lit up. Annieâs, too. âCan you drive a stick?â
âI learned to drive in a VW bug.
